Wire-rope specialists Casar and Teijin Aramid have developed a unique hybrid cable especially for the
mining sector that combines a Twaron-fiber core with an outside layer of steel wire. Until now, this sector favored all-steel cables for strength and durability. However, this new hybrid cable has a much better strength-to-weight ratio – it is just as strong, but much lighter than an all-steel cable of the same diameter. This enables mining operations to boost efficiency significantly. After all, hoists have to support the weight of the cable as well as the actual load – so a lighter cable makes heavier loads possible, and rubble can be cleared away more quickly. What’s more, thanks to its Twaron core, the hybrid cable is more resistant to bending fatigue than all-steel cables, giving the hybrid a longer life-span. This use of aramid has wide potential for other cable applications where a good strength-to-weight ratio is crucial – such as in offshore hoists and crane cables.
